The layer you don't see

Clay and concrete tiles are heavy and durable, and they shed most of the rain. The underlayment beneath them is what keeps water out of the house. So a tile roof can leak even when every tile looks fine, and a leak isn't always under a broken tile. The flashing at valleys, walls and chimneys matters just as much.

Roof work underway on a tile roof: blue underlayment and wood battens on the upper slopes, finished tile on the lower roof.

Clay or concrete?

Both are heavy, so the roof structure has to be able to carry them.

  • Clay tile

Made from fired clay. Often the curved, terracotta-colored tile seen on Spanish and Mediterranean-style homes, though it comes in other shapes and colors too.

  • Concrete tile

Made from concrete, in flat and curved profiles and a wide range of colors. It is generally heavier than clay tile.

Please don't walk on it

Tiles can crack under a person's weight when they're stepped on in the wrong place. Instead of climbing up to look for a leak, tell us what you've seen from the ground or inside the house, and leave the roof to us.

Roof repair

Planning a tile roof

The tile style and its weight, the roof structure and the underlayment all matter for a new tile roof. Tell us what's on the property now and the look you want, and we'll talk through the options after seeing it.

Roof replacement

Common questions

Can you replace a few broken tiles?

Often, yes. Matching an older tile can take some searching, especially if that style is no longer made, so tell us if you have spare tiles left over from the original roof.

Did hail damage my tile roof?

Large hail can crack or chip tiles. Look from the ground for broken pieces on the roof or around the house, then call us rather than climbing up.
