How a spray foam roof is built
Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) is sprayed in layers to the thickness the roof needs.
- It sticks to the surface beneath and forms one closed-cell layer without seams
- The foam itself is the waterproof layer, and it insulates the roof as well
- Its thickness can be varied to help water drain away
- It is then covered with a protective coating
Why the coating matters
Sunlight breaks down exposed foam, so a spray foam roof is always coated, commonly with an acrylic, silicone or urethane coating. The coating wears over the years and is renewed by recoating, which is part of looking after a foam roof.
Roof coatingsThings to know
Spray foam can't go onto a wet or damp surface, and wind carries overspray, so nearby windows, walls and cars are masked or protected. It takes trained applicators and the right equipment. Once it's on, inspect the roof twice a year and after severe storms; minor surface damage is usually a simple repair, best done before water reaches the foam.
The layers that make a foam roof work
Foam
Spray polyurethane foam forms a continuous layer; its thickness and condition matter.
Protective coating
The foam needs a coating over it to protect it from sunlight and weather. Recoating is different from spraying a new foam roof.
Details
Drains, penetrations and roof edges still need a sound transition, even on a seamless surface.
Common questions
Is spray foam a membrane?
Not a sheet membrane like PVC or TPO. The sprayed foam forms its own seamless waterproof layer, and a coating on top protects it from sunlight.
Is spray foam the same as a roof coating?
No. The foam is the roof's insulating layer; the coating is the thin protective layer on top of it.
