Patio Covers and Pergolas
Shade makes a San Antonio patio usable on summer afternoons. We build roofed patio covers, open pergolas and porch roofs, and because we're roofers, we take care over where a cover meets your house.

Which kind of shade?
Patio cover
A solid roof over the patio, for shade and shelter from rain. Attached to the house or standing on its own.
Pergola
An open frame of beams and rafters that filters the sun rather than blocking it, and lets the rain through.
Porch roof
A roof over the front or back entry, usually tied into the house roof.
Where the cover meets the house
An attached patio cover or porch roof joins the house at the wall or at the roof edge. That joint is where leaks start if the flashing isn't right, so we treat it as roofing work: water runs off the new roof and away from the house, not into the wall.
A cover that suits the house
A cover looks right when it belongs to the house: a pitch and materials that suit it, shingles or metal to match the main roof, and posts and trim painted to go with the rest. Tell us what you have in mind and we'll talk through the options.
Metal roofingThings to decide first
A few questions shape the design:
- How much of the patio you want covered, and when you use it
- Full shade and shelter from rain, or filtered sun
- Attached to the house, or freestanding in the yard
- Whether it covers an existing deck
Common questions
Will a patio cover make the house darker inside?
It shades the windows beneath it, which also keeps those rooms cooler. The height and pitch of the cover change how much light gets in, and we'll talk about it when we plan the design.
Can a pergola be covered later?
Some can. If you think you might want a cover one day, tell us at the start so the frame is planned for it.
