What a TPO roof is
TPO is a blend of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene. Each sheet has a polyester or fiberglass reinforcement built in, and is laid over insulation and usually fastened down or glued down.
- Heat-welded seams join the sheets into one surface
- Most TPO is white, reflecting much of the sun's heat
- It's made without the plasticizers used in PVC
How it differs from PVC and EPDM
TPO and PVC look alike and are both welded, but they're different materials; for kitchen grease or rooftop chemicals, PVC is usually the better choice. EPDM, the 'rubber roof', is another membrane altogether: a synthetic rubber joined with tape or adhesive.
PVC roofingRepairing a TPO roof
Most TPO leaks trace back to a seam, a flashing, a pipe or vent, or a puncture. Older, weathered TPO has to be cleaned and prepared before a new patch will weld to it.

Seams
A TPO roof depends on welded seams. If a leak follows a seam or a previous patch, note its location before the inspection.
Rooftop equipment
Vents and units interrupt the membrane and create details that need careful attention.
Drainage
Tell us where water sits after rain; low spots may point to a problem beyond the membrane surface.
Common questions
Why is TPO usually white?
A white surface reflects much of the sun's heat, which helps keep the roof and the building beneath it cooler.
Can a TPO roof be coated?
Some can, with a coating made for TPO and careful preparation. We'll tell you whether yours is a candidate.
