What gutters do
Gutters catch the water running off the roof, and downspouts carry it away from the house. When they overflow, sag or pull loose, water can soak the fascia board behind them, splash against the walls and collect by the foundation.
What to look for from the ground
You can see all of this from the ground, so there's no need to climb a ladder.
Overflowing in rain
Water spilling over the edge usually points to a clog, a gutter that has lost its slope, or a downspout that can't keep up.
Sagging or loose sections
A gutter pulling away from the house lets water run behind it and down the wall.
Water pooling by the house
Downspouts should empty away from the walls and foundation, not beside them.
Drips at seams and corners
Drips from joints and corners during rain usually mean a seam or its sealant has opened.
Trees, granules and gutters
Leaves and twigs from the big oaks common around San Antonio collect in gutters and roof valleys, and a blocked gutter can back water up at the roof edge. If you're finding shingle granules in the gutters under an older roof, the roof itself may be wearing; mention it when you get in touch.
Roof repairGutters and the roof
Gutters, downspouts and roof edges work together to carry water away. Let us know if the gutter problem began after a storm, or if a roof leak appeared at the same time.
Storm damageCommon questions
Can you do the gutters when you replace the roof?
Yes. If you're planning a new roof, tell us about the gutters too, and we can look at both together.
My gutters overflow only in heavy rain. Is that a problem?
It can be. A gutter or downspout that is partly blocked, or too small for the roof above it, may only show it in a downpour. Tell us where it happens.
