Wood or metal?
Wood
The familiar privacy fence: it blocks the view and takes stain or paint, and it needs upkeep as it weathers.
Metal
Open rather than solid, with little upkeep beyond touching up the finish. It suits front yards and gardens you want to see through.
Common fence repairs
Most fence problems start at the posts or the gate:
- Leaning sections, and loose or rotted posts
- Broken, warped or missing pickets
- Gates that sag, drag or won't latch
- Damage from wind or fallen limbs
- Rails pulling away from the posts
Before a new fence goes in
Know where your property line runs, and agree the plan with your neighbor if the fence will be shared. Point out sprinkler lines if you know where they are, and think about where you need a gate and how wide it must be for a mower or trash cans.
Common questions
Should I repair or replace my fence?
If most of the posts are solid, replacing the bad posts, pickets or rails is usually enough. If many posts have rotted or the fence leans along its length, a new fence often makes more sense. We'll tell you what we find.
Can you fix my gate?
Yes. A sagging or dragging gate is one of the most common fence repairs, and it usually comes down to the post, the hinges or the frame.
