Planning a new deck
A deck is planned around how you'll use it and the yard it sits in:
- How big it needs to be for a table and chairs, or a grill
- How high it sits: level with the back door, or low to the ground
- Steps and railings, and where you'll walk on and off
- Sun and shade through the day, and whether you might want a cover or pergola later
- The decking material, and how much upkeep you're happy with
Signs a deck needs repair
Walk your deck once a year. A loose railing or a soft step is a safety problem, so don't wait on those. Call us if you find:
- Boards that are soft, split or springy underfoot
- Loose or wobbly railings and steps
- Nails or screws working their way up
- Rot where posts meet the ground or where the deck meets the house
- Gray, dried-out wood that soaks up water
Cleaning and restaining
Stain protects wood from sun and water as well as coloring it, and it wears away, fastest where the deck gets the most sun and foot traffic. Restaining starts with fixing loose or damaged boards, then cleaning the deck and letting it dry before the new stain goes on.
Common questions
Should I repair or replace my deck?
If the frame and posts are sound, replacing worn boards and railings can extend a deck's life. If the structure underneath has rotted, a new deck may be the better choice. We'll tell you what we find.
How often should a deck be restained?
It depends on the stain, the wood and how much sun the deck gets. A simple test: sprinkle water on the boards. If it soaks in instead of beading up, it's time.
