What a PVC roof is
A PVC roof is made of large sheets, reinforced at the factory with polyester or fiberglass, rolled out over insulation.
- Seams are joined with hot air, so the sheets fuse into one continuous surface
- Plasticizers keep the sheet flexible
- The sheet is fastened down, glued down or held in place by ballast
- Usually white or light-colored, so it reflects much of the sun
Where PVC suits
PVC resists many oils, greases and chemicals, so it's often chosen for restaurants and buildings with kitchen exhaust or chemical exposure on the roof. It is also used on offices, stores and warehouses.
Repairing a PVC roof
Leaks usually start at seams, flashings and penetrations, or where the sheet has been punctured. A PVC repair is usually a patch of new membrane welded over the cleaned damage.
Commercial roof repairWhat determines whether PVC is a fit?
Building use
Restaurants and other operations can expose a roof to grease or chemicals. Tell us what vents and exhausts are on the roof.
Drainage and details
The membrane needs sound seams and careful work at drains, edges and penetrations; the roof shape matters as much as its open area.
Existing assembly
Insulation, decking and any old roof layers affect what a repair or replacement can involve.
Common questions
Is PVC the same as TPO?
No. Both are single-ply membranes with welded seams, but they're made from different materials. PVC is usually chosen where grease or chemicals reach the roof.
Is PVC a rubber roof?
No. 'Rubber roof' usually means EPDM, a synthetic rubber sheet; PVC is a plastic sheet joined by welding.
